Strawberry Capital of Illinois

Find out why Jasper County has been dubbed the “Strawberry Capital of Illinois” at the Strawberryfest held each June on the square in Newton. All your favorite strawberry dishes, flats and flats of berries and several activities make this a festival for your taste buds.


The Jasper County Fair

The Jasper County Fair is the oldest continually operating fair in the state. Various events and activities are held each evening with Harness Racing a featured event.

Newton Fall Festival

September brings the Newton Fall Festival with crafters, concessionaires, entertainment and one of the largest festival parades in Illinois.

Burl Ives and the Holly Jolly Christmas Celebration

Oscar-winning actor and acclaimed folk music singer and author Burl Ives was born in Jasper County and residents pay tribute to him with their “Holly Jolly Christmas Celebration” from late November to mid-December. The festival is named for the Johnny Marks that Ives recorded in 1965 and which was featured in the animated classic Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, in which Ives also voiced the character of Sam the Snowman. Ives died in 1995 and is interred in Mound Cemetery near Yale, IL.

Outdoor Fun

Outdoorsmen and outdoor recreation enthusiasts make good use of the county's two lakes and the activities offered by each. Sam Parr State Fish & Wildlife Area features a 183-acre lake, located northeast of Newton on Rt. 33. Newton Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area features a 1,775-acre lake located southwest of Newton off Rt. 33.
