Genealogy research has recently become a national phenomenon. It seems everyone is looking for information on their ancestors and traveling great distances to research their family trees. If your ancestors are from Southeastern Illinois here are several places to begin your research. Libraries

Newton Public Library

Hours: M, W, F 10 am to 5 pm; T, Th 10 am to 7 pm; Sat. 10 am to 1 pm

More than 18,000 books, including 500 large print editions. The library has available five daily newspapers, including the Olney Daily Mail, Effingham Daily News, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Decatur Herald and Review. The Newton Press Mentor and Jasper County News Eagle are also available to library patrons.

The library has available for use by patrons, (2) microfilm readers, and microfilm reader-printers, (3) Internet accessible microcomputers, a photocopy machine, and a fax machine. Membership in the Shawnee Library System makes it possible for the library to order books and other materials on loan from the other Shawnee member libraries. Museums

Jasper County Museum

100 S. Van Buren St., Newton

Hours: M, W, F 10 am to 5 pm; T, Th 10 am to 7 pm; Sat. 10 am to 1 pm

The Museum, housed together with the Newton Library, began in 1966 by two Newton druggists, Henry and Frank Schackmann, who donated the first items that were placed in the museum.
